Has anyone made a videogame where you’re a princess locked at the top of a tower and have to fight your way down to ground level? Because dang.

Like, think about it: you’re given this nice little room and no objectives at all and when you open the door the guard says ‘stay in there’ so you wait and nothing happens and you open the door again and try and walk out and the guard pushes you back in and says things like ‘you’re our prisoner’ and ‘where are you going, you’re stuck here’ and ‘are you trying to meet your prince? he won’t ever get up THIS high’ and ‘get back inside before I get mad’. But you can pick up a vase of flowers, and you can swing it around. And the thing is all the guards are expecting the hero to be battling his way up, and all this one wimpy little guard at the top is posted to your room for is to push you back into your room, so you can smash him over the head because he’s just not expecting it, and then steal his weapons. And after that you find that the guards are always bigger and stronger than you—and they get bigger and stronger every level down—but you can generally manage to get the first shot in because they’re waiting for the hero, and you’re the princess. And maybe there’s puzzles and stuff too, but you have to solve them backwards, working your way along from end to start, because they’re all set up for the hero. And when you get the bottom and you have the fight of your life because the guards are massed up waiting for the hero, tons of them with awesome weapons and armor and spells and you think it’s the boss battle, but when they’re all dead and the final ground-level door is free to open the credits don’t roll. And you realize there must be one more fight outside the doors, too, before you’re free, so you equip the best armor and weapons and potions you can find and go outside and you fight this one huge lone badass man on a badass horse in the sunlight. Then he’s finally defeated, and lying in the grass, and his horse is yours, and the credits still aren’t rolling. And you look at his corpse and you see he’s got a locket on, and in that locket is a picture of your face.

And then you realize that that was the hero.

And then the credits roll.

New Call For Art: Station Zero: Light Grey Art Lab’s Sci Fi Show, celebrating the authors, titles and images of 1950s - 1970s science fiction.

Worlds within worlds. Airtight space stations housing alien races. Biodomes covering spires built by artificial intelligence. The bridge between physics, futuristic science, philosophy and anthropology.

Yes, we realize that you’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover, but judging by the covers of these books, the future of the universe is pretty sick. Over the last couple months I’ve been amassing a huge technicolor library of vintage sci-fi books from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Isaac Asimov, Poul Anderson, Ursula K Le Guin and Arthur C. Clarke are just some of the names that grace the covers of these beauties.

Our newest show, STATION ZERO, pays tribute to the days when writers were creating works about YEAR 2013 (Yes, this is an actual title of one of the books I have) as if we’d all be wearing stylish foil space suits while eating nutri-cubes for dinner.
We’re looking for artists interested in joining us in revisiting classics from this era in larger-than-life posters.

How it’ll work:
If you’re interested in joining us, put your name, website and email in the comments!

Then! After we get our ultimate list of sci-fi artists, we’ll mail all of our participating artists a unique, and amazing vintage book that you will use as the basis for your poster.

There are only a couple rules for the show!
0. We’ll pick a book from our library at random and send you one through the post!
1. All of the type that was included on the front cover of the original book (That includes the title, author and any other interesting phrases, prices, or notes!) should be included in your final poster.
2. It’s optional to read the book, but we strongly recommend reading it if you can! (It might be really fantastic and help inform your work!)
3. This is a vintage themed sci-fi show, but you are able to interpret the art however you’d like.
4. Once you receive the books, please love them with all of your hearts! :)

The final works will be showcased in the gallery and online as 18” x 24” posters alongside a mini print of the original book cover and some information about the book.

And yes, you get to keep the book!

Please help us spread the word to anyone that loves type, sci-fi, or posters. We’re really excited about this show and hope you’ll love these books as much as we do!

I’ve cosplayed for years, so my daughter has grown up seeing me in all kinds of costumes, but outside of Halloween stuff hadn’t taken much interest in dressing up herself so I never pushed the idea of cosplaying on her. Some of her favorite books in her collection are the little endless books about Deliriums adventures, she’s even shown them off at show and tell at school. So I’d been talking to her about this upcoming con I was going to and working at and she excitedly asked me if she could dress up as Delirium and have me go with her as Death. I was beyond excited at her request and quickly whipped these costumes up for us! Was so fun having her along with me and she really loved coming with me to a con for the first time. It was also awesome having her be the one who wanted to do the costume as she was in character the whole time introducing herself as Delirium and singing about her fishy balloon, even had her stuffed dog “Maribelle” cosplay with her as Barnabas.

You have no idea how happy this makes me.
